Anglo-French Club Swindon (AF Club, Swindon) – Newsletter – The way forward from November, Christmas and into early 2021
A committee meeting took place on 4 November 2020 to discuss how our club would operate under the second national lockdown due to Covid 19. This is what we have decided as the way forward at the current time.
The club will continue to function assuming that most of the monthly sessions will be online until at least spring 2021. The club intends that members keep in touch, on-line, and has already had two successful zoom conferences thanks to our speaker and Pascale organising on-line access. We intend following our published programme, as far as possible, but with some amendments, to use the zoom technology and keep the membership safe.
The following zoom conferences are scheduled:
27 nov Thierry Viennois « Le XXème siècle « dessiné » par Tintin »
2021
Variety in our published programme also includes the following:
11 déc Buffet de Noel comprises our on-line French quiz prepared, by popular demand, by Benoit and Pacale. Bring a glass to the screen. There is also the opportunity for members to say just a few words, on their best Christmas. Let Pascale know if you are interested to speak. Also, Pascale will highlight some surprising comparisons between a French and British Christmas. One hour is scheduled for our celebration.
15 jan The film “Fete de famille” avec Catherine Deneuve, will operate by physically moving the DVD film from person to person, by hand or by post, for a few days at a time, through interested members to allow you to watch the film in the safely of your own home, given the absence of suitable club premises. On 15th January we can meet online to discuss the film.
23 avril Film “Joyeuse retraite » avec Michele Laroques et Thierry Lhermitte. Similar passing of the DVD amongst members and discussion opportunites apply.
Subscriptions
To sustain the above programme the club requires some funding. Subscriptions are due. Membership subscriptions for 2019-2020 are extended until 31 December 2020 giving you a bargain of 15 rather than 12 months subscription. This means that the 2020 membership is due on 1 January 2021. The zoom video conferences do cost. We hope for some subsidy from Alliance Française, and there are savings from speaker travel costs and hall hire. However, even with some club reserves, we foresee outgoings (e.g. renewal of the film license etc) so we need a little membership financial support.
Membership subscription including the three zoom conferences in 2021 is £10. This includes the proposed two films so a great bargain! Further information from Simon, our trésorier, on payment methods will follow.
That brings me to a conclusion that by, at least 18 juin, we hope to have our Assemblée Générale and celebration for 14 juillet, face to face. If Covid circumstances permit, our zoom conferences can quickly be converted to face-to-face sessions and our speakers are willing to assist.
We hope that your club is working for you, keeping you in touch and offering a varied programme. Should anyone require technical help to set – up zoom let Pascale know and we will arrange. Remember to welcome new guests, family and friends on our new programme, which is on-line and therefore not locationally based. Guests may join from further afield. This can be arranged via Pascale with a small payment for an individual conference or film session.
I hope that this is a comprehensive account of the way forward for the club as we currently see it.
Meantime keep safe and keep in touch.
